Mary’s Lament at the Wedding

To give them what they want

molds the bread and ruins the wine.

Son, if you knew men

and not what they should be,

you would know

that joy is not as necessary

as the promise.

leavens the bread, lets the wine breath.

Son, if you knew women

and that it is you that they need,

you would know

that joy is as necessary

as the promise.

There is wine in the cellar.

Make the men glad

and the woman less sad

for a moment,

and the promise will wait.
