Try to remember how to float.
Curve your chest out.
Spread your arms wide.
Your legs can curl a little under, but not too much.
Close your eyes—the sky won’t see you either way.
If the water becomes too much like air and you taste salt,
spit and stay.
Let the undertow between the waves
draw you out, in, between.
The rockaways are miles away, aren’t they?
